Digital Dental Radiography is a sophisticated process that allows your www.toothache.ie dentist to take a detailed picture of your teeth. It helps us to closely monitor your dental health and is available in all our www.toothache.ie surgeries. But digital dental radiography doesn’t just help us diagnose teeth related problems. It can also highlight a range of other conditions including gum disease, cysts, tumors, risks of diabetes and heart disease. At www.toothache.ie we believe this technology is so important that if your www.toothache.ie dentist recommends it we will include it as part of your dental examination or treatment at

Hello and welcome to our latest update from www.toothache.ie . Today we asked Dr. Eamonn Noonan to talk us through some of the latest groundbreaking technology that he uses to great advantage for his patients.
www.toothache.ie: Right Dr Eamonn we are going to talk about digital dental radiographs as opposed to traditional film X-rays that are taken in the dental surgery. First of all tell us how does it work?

Dr. Eamonn Noonan: Hi! The physical process for digital dental radiography is actually similar to traditional dental x-rays that use film. With digital dental radiography we gently place a sensor in the patients mouth to record the image of their teeth but that is where the similarities between conventional dental X-rays and modern digital dental radiographs end. Although it resembles the film used for conventional dental x-rays the digital sensor is a sophisticated electronic sensor and it is connected to a computer. Once the radiograph is taken the image is projected on the screen for viewing.

www.toothache.ie: There are lots of advantages to digital cameras so talk us through some of the advantages of digital dental radiographs.

Dr. Eamonn Noonan: The core advantage for both the patient and the dentist is that digital dental radiography is faster. We get the information straight away onto the screen. It actually makes the dental appointment quicker because what traditionally would happen is that the conventional X-ray would be taken and would take up to ten minutes in a dark room to develop these images, then take them out and view them on a little light box. All you got was a little black and white picture and sometimes the quality might not be great if the developing solution was old etc. Not only is modern digital dental radiography faster but the image can be edited. It can be made bigger it can be done in color to contrast it better. It can be measured. It can be compared to previous digital dental radiographs. All instantly!!

www.toothache.ie: Okay so it is just like photography. The old fashioned way to take the photo, drop the film off to be developed and come back then to collect your photos versus new digital cameras. Take the photo view it on screen, edit it, print it, e-mail it etc..

Dr. Eamonn Noonan: That’s it exactly

www.toothache.ie : Wow, you get a faster higher quality image with digital dental radiography. That is a serious advantage to an emergency dental patient with a toothache. You want an accurate diagnosis to get the treatment as fast as possible to fix the problem and get you out of dental pain.

Dr Eamonn Noonan: Yes and less radiation too. In fact up to 90% less radiation compared to old fashioned conventional X-rays to take a sharper picture of the patients tooth. Let us get this straight the patient is our number one priority at www.toothache.ie and our goal is to balance the enormous diagnostic benefits of radiographs with any potential risks. Despite the minimal exposure risk form digital dental radiographs we are still very conservative in prescribing them and only recommend them when the diagnostic benefit out weighs the very small risk. By investing so much money in digital dental radiography equipment we minimize the small potential risks for our patients at www.toothache.ie.

Digital dental radiographs are also better for the environment too. With digital dental radiographs no harmful chemicals are used to develop them like conventional old fashioned X-rays. There is no wasted space of a dark room and no need to store film which can pile up.

It also frees up more of our dental assistants time from developing film and cleaning out the developer solution etc. This extra time can be used to do what our dental assistants do best i.e. look after www.toothache.ie's number one priority - the patient!!!!

www.toothache.ie : Very good!! So digital dental radiographs are faster, with a better quality image, with minimal exposure and are environmentally friendly too. Now if you want to send it to a specialist there is also a benefit too?

Dr. Eamonn Noonan: Correct. Rather than having to drop the conventional X-ray film in the post or give it to the patient to mind it to get it to the specialist a digital dental radiograph can be sent over in a simple email very quickly. For example if I see something abnormal on the digital dental radiograph, I can send it to the oral surgeon, the implantologist or the endodontist and say “What do you think is going on here?” Sometimes we can even get the second opinion while the patient is still in the chair. Again the patient is the number one priority for www.toothache.ie!!

www.toothache.ie: How much do the digital dental radiographs cost?
